The Young Australian Truck Driver competition is an initiative of the Australian Trucking Association and Scania, and focuses on driving skills, safety and fuel efficiency.
It is held every two years.
The competition replicates the highly successful Young European Truck Driver, which has been hosted by Scania and supported by the European Commission and the International Road Transport Union in Europe since 2003.
During 2007, Scania truck driver competitions were held in 39 countries in Europe, South America, South Africa and Taiwan. Altogether, the competitions attracted more than 30,000 competitors and 40,000 visitors.
The Young Australian Truck Driver 2007 was held between January and April 2007 and was open to Australian residents born after 1 April 1967 who held a HC or MC licence. It attracted 1500 entries.
Shell, Continental, NTI, MaxiTRANS and Fleetmark were co-sponsors of the event, which was won by Melbourne-based driver David Whyte. The prize was a Scania P 420 prime mover.
