A guide for prospective owner drivers

Scania and the ATA have joined forces to help launch a guide for those considering a career as an owner-driver.

The Owner Driver Information Booklet includes tips on vehicle selection, vehicle maintenance, finance, legal obligations and accreditation.
It has been funded and supported by Scania and the Australian Trucking Association.
The 56-page A5-size guide has been compiled by industry stalwart Peter Rocke and is designed to assist prospective owner-drivers through the initial steps in the process.
“Small business is the backbone of this industry, and I am delighted the ATA can lend its support to helping those embark on such a worthy venture,” ATA Chief Executive Stuart St Clair said.
“Many young hopefuls in the industry are often bereft of industry-specific knowledge on becoming an owner driver, because while there’s no shortage of information about starting a small business, there is a lack of concise information on the other aspects unique to road transport, like vehicle selection and vehicle maintenance.
“This guide addresses that gap: it’s a one-stop resource where owner-driver aspirants can get access to all the information they need.
“It’s been written in a highly readable style and will appeal to anyone seeking common-sense answers to the many questions that arise in establishing a small business in road transport.”
Scania Australia Managing Director José Badía said supporting the Owner Driver Information Booklet was a natural extension of Scania’s commitment to the driver.
“Scania’s priority in design and engineering has always been on the driver, and this information booklet continues with that philosophy and tradition,” he said.
“From our comfortable and ergonomic cabs to programs like the young driver competitions that we host around the world, Scania has always considered the welfare and development of the driver as crucial to our mission.
“This year’s Young Australian Truck Driver competition was a similar joint venture with the ATA aimed at improving the training and status of the professional driver; this venture is very much in a similar vein.
“I commend it to anyone who is considering embarking on a career as an owner-driver in this industry”.
