R 620 heads up Scania 2008 product line-up
A new 620hp R-series with 3000Nm of torque is to be the flagship of Scania's 2008 range.
The R 620 will be powered by the Scania 16-litre V8 – Australia’s only proven large-displacement engine under a truck with European levels of quality and sophistication.
Scania’s 2008 range is powered by engines that use both urea and non-urea-based emission-reduction technology.
The non-urea technology, known as exhaust gas recirculation, is fitted to the in-line (five and six-cylinder) engines. The V8 engine uses a urea-based additive, sold as NoNox, as an ingredient in its emission reduction technolog. Selective Catalytic Reduction is also available as an option on the 12-litre 420hp rating. The engines are being introduced to coincide with the introduction of ADR80/02 (Euro 4), which applies to all new trucks from 1 January 2008.
The new R 620 will be powered by the DC16 08 620 engine with four valves per cylinder, PDE unit injection, turbocharger and charge air cooler. It will generate 620hp (456kW) @ 1900rpm and 2200lb ft (3000Nm) @ 1100-1400rpm.
It will be available with the Scania GRSO905 overdrive transmission.
A 19,000kg drive axle with a 3.42:1 rear axle ratio is standard. 21,000kg single reduction and 26,000kg and 30,000kg hub reduction axles can be optioned.
Other improvements to the 2008 range include higher torque on Scania’s 340hp and 380hp ratings, a new 12-litre 480hp rating and a new 560hp V8 rating.
“To have three V8-ratings instead of the previous two means more choice for operators from the only proven large displacement engine with advanced Europe fuel-saving technology,” he said.
“We anticipate the 500hp and 560hp will make up the bulk of V8 sales, however the 620hp rating with 3000Nm will have enormous appeal for those operators on road train or heavy haul work.”
Initially, the P 420 will be the only short-haul truck that will be offered with selective catalytic reduction.
“The P 420 means operators can still specify one of Scania’s most popular power ratings combined with the convenience of a low cab height for the best cab access of any model on the market,” said Scania Australia National Manager Sales and Marketing John Kananghinis.
“Of course, if operators prefer the convenience of just adding diesel, the P 380 has had a boost in torque and the big-cab R 420 is powered by an EGR engine.”
Scania’s short-haul and intrastate model line-up includes the P 230, P 270 and P 310 powered by the Scania five-cylinder nine-litre engine and the P 340, P 380, P 420, R 420 and R 480 powered by the Scania 12-litre engine.
The line-haul, road train and heavy haul line-up includes the R 500, R 560 and R 620.
Scania’s venerable 11-litre engine will no longer be available in Australia.
“We’ve been able to meet the requirements of Euro 4 quite simply as well as upgrade some of our power ratings. The 340hp and 380hp ratings have both enjoyed a 100Nm boost in torque as a result of the bigger 12-litre displacement,” he said.
The new 480hp rating comes with 2250 Nm (1660 lb ft) from a 12-litre displacement that retains the fuel-saving turbo-compounding technology of the previous 470hp rating. The 12-litre 420hp also gets turbo-compounding.
“Aside from the new power ratings, the only other change to our line-up has been the introduction of the R 420 as our premium short-haul and intrastate prime mover,” John said.
The R-series cab is available with any Scania engine from 340hp upward. The P-series cab is restricted to engine outputs up to 380hp with an EGR engine or 420hp with the SCR engine.
